CarpetsCarpets are one amongst crucial elements in decorating our homes and bussiness spaces. Carpet making technique is very old; the oldest carpet – Pazyryk (named by the place where found) is from the fifth century B.C. and represents sofistication of colours, wool quality and design. The technique of the whole carpet making process is pretty much the same through centuries – it is time consuming and requires all the patience, especially for the carpets with dense knots, natural colours and slim threads of warp and weft. Besides warps and wefts, carpets are made of knots which create its thickness. Once, carpets were used as protection from low temperatures, but soon enough became important mode of artistic expression. The most of carpets are found in Iran, Turkey, Afganistan, Pakistan, India, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, China... they are made of wool, cotton, silk, viscose, hemp, but often are made of combination of those materials.
KilimsKilims differ from carpets because they do not have knots – just warp and weft (longitudinal and horizontal threads). As a result of this "faster" technique, kilims are usually cheaper than carpets. Kilims that we offer are handmade on a very simple weaving machines and thus the whole process is very slow and time consuming. Kilims are usually made of wool - sheep wool, goat wool, camel wool; but sometimes they are made of cotton or hemp; very rarely of silk... Designs specific to certain regions or tribes are often transferred to other cultures so it is amost impossible to confirm the originality of ornaments and draw the strict line between mutual influences. Today some of the top textile designers create patterns for modern kilims. Soumak is a type of kilim which is made not only of warp and weft but of "chainlets" as well. This technique is a very complex one and very rarely used nowdays. We offer several high quality soumaks made in Iran, with natural colours and warp of wool.
